((sry, Roxy-san, but when we were talking on AIM yesterday, I spilled orange juice over my laptop...now it is out of order...))
"Ruun~!"
A black-haired boy sprinted with maximum speed around the corner, closely followed by a group of girls. When he felt that he had a healthy margin, he spun around and showed the entire Prince Yuki Fan-club a typical Manabe-like grin. Waving with his hands, he shouted gleefully at them: "Nuh~nuh~ girls shouldn't be that agressive! It isn't my fault that Yuki is a princess!"
Of course he reaped many disgusting looks from the girls with that, but Manabe didn't care about it. This kind of provocation served the crazy fan-girls right. What would Yun-Yun say if he would have heard Manabe now? Surely nothing good would happen to him...
Manabe ran a few metres and disappeared in the boys' bathroom. 'Now let's see what they'll do...' He chuckled and peeked through the door gap. The girls ran past the bathroom and soon, the psychopathic fan-club was outside the range of vision.

Saki was just on her way back to class from the library - she had needed to check out a book for a research project she was working on with Arisa and Tohru - when the Puri-Yuki fangirls sped past her, seemingly on the warpath. She stopped for a mere moment to turn her head and watch them go - only mildly surprised that they had not stopped to say anything negative towards her - before continuing on. It really was none of her concern, and frankly, if it didn't involve Tohru or Arisa, it really didn't bother her.
She was just about to walk past the boys' bathroom when suddenly, she stopped; her eyes narrowing the slightest bit, she turned her head slowly to stare back at the pair of vaguely familiar dark eyes that peered through the slightly ajar bathroom door.
"Ah...so it is you..."
Normally, she would not have bothered; she would have kept on walking, not bothering herself with the object of the Puri-Yuki fangirl's pursuit if it wasn't her friends. However, this case was an exception; it was that boy, that oh so familiar boy she couldn't quite place. And this seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so...

The voice was barely perceivable, but Manabe recognized the unusual voice immediately...and also the girl it belonged to: Saki Hanajima. She had long, dark hair and her mysterious eyes were unsuggestive of her inner thoughts. Usually people say that the face mirrors the soul, but either Saki had no soul or she hid it very skillfully. Manabe looked at the girl with amazement and a smirk crossed his face.
"Ah, you found me, teehee..." laughed Manabe and came out of his hideout. "Hanajima-san, I assume?" he added, bowing politely. He had heard many things about her. Actually, he eavesdropped the Yuki Fanclub. And he wasn't ashamed of that, far from it, he enjoyed spying on the stalkers! They said nasty things about her, but Manabe received the impression that they were incredibly scared of Saki. 'She has to be a nice girl, no doubt' concluded Manabe. And obviously, he was right. Saki seemed to be a very nice girl. At least until now.

Saki blinked. He was not at all as she had envisioned him. Her memory of him - shrouded as it was - was the face of a serious-looking young man. The boy in front of her, though, seemed quite light-hearted - even if she spied something in his eyes that spoke differently, something he seemed to want to conceal. Perhaps that was where the serious-looking boy had gone. However, she decided to put this out of her mind for the moment; finally, the denpa reader responded with a bow of her own. Her hair - freed from its usual braid - dropped as she did so, framing her face and shielding her eyes from vision. When she stood straight once more, her dark, wavy hair fell gracefully upon her shoulders.
Slowly, ever so slowly, she nodded, holding his gaze with her own evenly. "Yes, that is correct...and you are?"
Perhaps hearing his name would allow her to remember who he was...she examined him carefully. Familiar...he was so familiar...

Manabe smiled sheepishly at the unimpressed girl. "Oh my, I am so oblivious...Allow me to introduce myself..." he took a deep breath and stepped forward.
"I am Manabe Kakeru, the protector and loyal advisor of the school's beloved president, Prince Yun-Yun Sohma!" With a quick gesture, he pulled his student council pin out of his trouser pocket and showed it to Saki.
"I believe you've already heard of me? I mean, a person like me, with such a gleaming past and bright future ahead of me...must surely be noted?!" Manabe's face showed obvious signs of childish excitement. But Saki just stared at him without any motion. Somehow, for inexplicable reasons, his stomach tightened when her dark eyes rested on his face and met with his'. It appeared to him as if her eyes suddenly flashed up for a second.
No, it must've been an illusion.
Despite his light uncertainty, he still smiled from one ear to another and waited for Saki to reply.

Saki blinked. Then she blinked again. She blinked once more as he continued rambling on, though her eyes had lit with a spark of recognition. Manabe Kakeru...yes, she did remember him from the Student Council, but...the spark died. That was not where he was so familiar from...he was from sometime long ago...it had been an unhappy time, she was sure, but...she could not bring herself to remembrance.
Finally, she realized she had been standing there silently for far too long since Manabe had stopped speaking, and brought herself to answer to his smiling face. Her gaze remained steady as she replied.
"I suppose you just...slipped my mind..."
She continued looking at him, unblinking. She really did need to get going; her teacher - and more importantly, her friends - would be wondering where she had gone off to. But she could not - would not? - make her feet move. She wanted to stay until she had figured out who this boy was; asking him directly was out of the question.
The denpa-sensing girl was startled out of her reverie as her book slipped from her hands and fell to the floor with a thud.
Slowly, she looked down at said object, blinking once, twice, thrice before speaking.
"...ah..."

How amazing she was! She didn't even show the slightest sign of annoyance! Most people would just shuffle Manabe away, but she just stood there and blinked. Manabe started to count. He found out that she actually blinked 11 times within 10 seconds. So in one minute, she would have blinked 66 times. Again, in one hour, she would...Manabe accumulated feverishly when suddenly, to his surprise, Saki piped up.
"I suppose you just...slipped my mind..."
'Eh?! Slipped her mind?' The boy wondered, puzzling over the meaning of this sentence. Saki in turn, he recognized, looked absent-mindely toward the classroom. 'Oh, she wants to return to class!' thought Manabe and wanted to tell her that he was sorry for holding her up for so long. But when he opened his mouth, one of Saki's books plunged down and almost smashed Manabe's toes. He eyed his feet, which have just escaped from a heavy book, carefully and glanced at the owner. However, her behaviour didn't change. She didn't shout out "Oh my gosh!" like other girls would have done. Just a simple "...ah..."
Manabe knuckled down and picked up the book. It was the same maths book he used. So they were in the same year.
"Here ye go" smiled Manabe and handed over the book.

Saki took it, making sure she had a firm grip on it this time before looking back up at Manabe. "Thank you." She spoke her words slowly and deliberately, eying him curiously.
Most of the boys she knew - Sohmas excluded - would not have had the decency to pick up something a girl dropped nowadays. This - if nothing else - put him a bit above her other peers, and made her view him a bit better, a little more than just a familiar face she wished to truly remember.
But not that much more. Not yet. After all, this was only the first - no, second time she had met him, and the first she could barely remember; he only showed up as a blurry countenance.
She wanted to know who he was; she truly did, this interesting, curious boy who had picked up her book for her.
And so - abandoning her previous thought - Saki asked the question in the most direct way she knew how.
"Who are you?"

'Eh?!' That was a bit strange. After all, he had just introduced himself to her. 'Maybe I talked so fast that she didn't hear my name or understand my strange sense of humour...'
"Well..." Manabe cleared his throat and repeated once again his name and his recent job as vice-president of the student council. "Yuki Sohma - is my supervisor." The boy waited curiously for Saki's exclamation, he had stressed the two words "Yuki Sohma" on purpose. However, the girl in black didn't show any signs of surprise or ardor (just like he thought). Obviously, she had brains unlike all the other squeamish fan girls. Manabe paused when something returned to his mind. He had seen Saki before...he saw her a week ago with a brunette...Tohru was her name...
Manabe remained silent for a long time. He started to remember the times when he had just walked past this extraordinary girl without paying her any attention. Indeed, this wasn't the first or second time they met. They've already met a dozen times, even though unknowingly.
"Oh my. School's already started. I think we should be going. Where's your classroom?" enquired Manabe and once again, he showed one of his typical smiles.

Saki would have sighed at his obvious misunderstanding, but it was not her style - instead, she closed her eyes for a moment as Manabe recited his name and status again. For some reason, he had accentuated Yuki's name, but that wasn't what was bothering Saki.
She still hadn't had her question answered, and Manabe didn't seem to comprehend what she was attempting to get at; not that this was very surprising. People rarely knew what she meant, and she wasn't being all that clear. The denpa-sensing girl opened her eyes to see Manabe with a contemplative expression on her face. She was considering asking him what was the matter, when he spoke again.
"Oh my. School's already started. I think we should be going. Where's your classroom?"
She blinked, then slowly glanced at the clock, before looking back at Manabe. Then she blinked again, understanding clearly what he was referring to. And then, slowly, ever so slowly, she shook her head - her gaze still not leaving his.
"You still have not answered my question."

Manabe frowned. He felt abashed for not understanding Saki. What else could he respond to her question? 'Who am I? What else can I say about myself?' The usually cheerful boy felt a bit lost and searched in vain for the answer in his vicinity.
The truth was that he was startled because obviously Saki didn't mean his name or social position (most people were only interested in these details, but again, he had the feeling that Saki wasn't <<most people>>). It seemed like she was searching for something under the surface, parts of Manabe, which weren't obvious for passers-by. No one ever considered asking him <<who he was>> (quite a bizarre question), who hid behind the Manabe-smile (he was very proud of it, a survey had shown that smiling boys were more attractive).
Manabe Kakeru felt imperiled by the sudden "intrusion".
'Nonsense!' he chastised himself with a touch of embarrassment when he remembered that Saki was still standing opposite to him and waiting patiently for an answer. 'Smart girl, that Saki' he told himself, forcing himself to an awkward smile.
"To be honest, I don't have the faintest idea of what you mean. What exactly do you want to know?" Yes, that would be the best way to answer...honesty was the only way to understand the girl in black.
((So bad! >.< grammar mistakes everywhere!))

Even before he spoke, Saki had determined what the boy's answer would be; she could discern it easily from the expression on his face.
He didn't understand. She could tell from the look in his eyes and the confused frown upon his face. He didn't know what she meant, and though she knew she had no right to, Hana-chan felt the slightest prick of impatience.
But it wasn't as if she had told him in plain words; she was speaking in riddles, and she realized it. But she wanted her answer.
She expressed none of these thoughts in the look on her face as Manabe forced an awkward smile and answered just as awkwardly.
"To be honest, I don't have the faintest idea of what you mean. What exactly do you want to know?"
Her response was sharper then she had intended it to be. "I want to know who you are, Manabe Kakeru-san. I know you." As she spoke, she had taken several steps forward, her dark eyes focused piercingly on his. "We have met...in the past."
Her tirade finished, she stepped back slightly, relaxing her shoulders, her gaze lessening to a rather loaded stare. "...I trust you have no more misunderstandings?"

A few nervous looks were enough for Manabe to detect that Saki Hanajima was becoming more and more impatient. What did she want from him? He tried to read her mind (if those diviner on the television could do it - why not Manabe?), but it was just as impossible as copying Yuki's answers during an exam.
Instead, he felt that her eyes were boring deeper and deeper into his mind and this wasn't pleasant at all. It caused the boy who usually had nerves of steel to shudder.
"I want to know who you are, Manabe Kakeru-san. I know you."
Suddenly, the girl took a step towards him without a warning. This reminded Manabe of a scene from a horror film where a psychopath did the very same thing before he killed his victim.
'These films are x-rated and should be forbidden' he thought and grinned awkwardly before hearing the following words out of Saki's mouth:
"We have met...in the past."
This was kind of funny. He didn't know why, but he just had to laugh at that moment. Ten seconds later, he already regretted it. This girl didn't seem like she was joking...
With a big crease between his eyebrows and his forefinger on his chin, he imitated someone who was trying to remember something.
The past....there were so many things she could have meant - they could've met in the kindergarden, in the elementary school or - Manabe's eyes widened with surprise. Of course! Why didn't he think of that earlier?
Saki Hanajima was usually hanging around with Tohru Honda, and this would mean that she actually knew about his relationship with Yuki's cohabitant.
He scratched his head sheepishly and finally opened his mouth with the sound of new-gained self-confindence:
"Ah~ I understand - but I guess it's not because we have met personally, I guess?"
